To maximize your time, we suggest starting early. The town of Salento is small, meaning it can easily be explored on foot. Take a walk along Calle Real, the town’s main street.
Here, you will find a wide variety of craft shops, traditional cafes, and souvenir spots. Admire the architecture, characterized by clay-tile and bahareque (wattle and daub) houses painted in bright, vibrant colors.
Don’t forget to visit Plaza de Bolívar, the heart of the town. Here, you can see the Church of Our Lady of Carmen (Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen) and enjoy the local atmosphere while watching the traditional Jeep Willys waiting for passengers.
At the end of Calle Real, you will find a large staircase that leads to the Alto de la Cruz Viewpoint (Mirador del Alto de la Cruz). Climbing the steps can be a bit of a challenge, but the reward is absolutely worth it.
From the top, you will enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the town of Salento and the green mountains of Quindío. The journey from Salento takes about 25 minutes in the traditional Jeep Willys. Upon arrival, you will find yourself in a dreamlike landscape: deep green hills dotted with giant palm trees reaching for the sky, often enveloped in a mystical mist.
For a one-day trip, we recommend taking the short trail that leads directly to the main viewpoints. This will take about two hours and will allow you to capture spectacular photos without exhausting your entire day.
